Teachers open event at the Suffolk energy-from-waste facility – 07/06/2023
The Suffolk energy-from-waste facility processes 295,000 tonnes of domestic and commercial waste each year – generating enough electricity to power 40,000 homes. Our objective is to provide an alternative to waste being sent to landfill and reduce the associated cost to Suffolk tax-payers, turning non-recyclable waste into energy.
We would like to invite you attend an evening for teachers and educators to visit the site to find out how we can support your pupils learn more about what happens to Suffolk’s domestic waste and how this fits into your curriculum. The evening will include presentations from waste education managers Siobhan O’Dell (SUEZ), Sarah Clarke (FCC environment) and Sam Oldfield (MSBDC).
This event is perfect for head teachers, deputy heads, school/eco council leads, science teachers, geography teachers and PSHE teachers.
There will be an opportunity for an optional tour of the site and visitor centre. Please be aware this involves a 1.5km walk including over 300 stairs. The tour involves a climb of 23 metres and several mesh walkways. The tour is not suitable for people with mobility issues or vertigo.
Dress code
• During the tour, full length trousers must be worn at all times for safety. Shorts, skirts or dresses are not permitted.
• Please ensure you wear sturdy, sensible footwear – i.e. walking boots or trainers. Sandals, flip flops or heeled shoes are not suitable.
• Whilst on the tour you are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including a hard hat, high visibility jacket, gloves and safety glasses, which will be provided.
Anyone failing to comply with the dress code will not be permitted on the tour
